PG&E moves to stop payment to some fire victims who settled after bankruptcy filing

Posted on 01/30/19 News

Richard Bridgford was quoted in a January 30, 2019 article in the Daily Journal to discuss how PG&E filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy will impact the lawsuits against the company. Bridgford is a part of a team of attorneys that are representing victims of the 2018 Woolsey Fire in Los Angeles and Ventura County. The same group has filed lawsuits against PG&E in Butte County over the Camp Fire. He offered the Daily Journal a hopeful perspective in his clients getting restitution from PG&E citing both the company’s extensive assets and institutional shareholders who have an interest in its survival.

He said, “I think they are going to have sufficient cash flow and assets to compensate victims,” adding that the Chapter 11 filing could actually speed up the process.

“PG&E claims are somewhere between three to 10 times bigger,” says Bridgford. “Southern California Edison is not, in my understanding, anywhere near what we’d call in the zone for bankruptcy filing.”
